University Canada West FAQ for Parents
Do you have an orientation to the university or the city of Vancouver?Yes. At orientation, students are given the opportunity to learn about the university, familiarize themselves with the campus, meet administration staff and find out where to ask for help if they need it. The goal of our orientation is to reinforce the learning culture and student support network at the university. What can you tell me about accommodation? We do not provide on-campus accommodations (such as dormitories). However, residential accommodation in the community can be found prior to arriving in Vancouver through the student notice board, and property rental information websites. As the rental market in Vancouver is very competitive, students should arrange to view more than one prospective rental unit, as these can be booked up rather quickly. Homestay options are also available for international students. Please contact the Student Services Coordinator for assistance regarding accommodations. Do you have scholarships, awards, bursaries or financial aid available? Yes. More information can be found on our Scholarship page. Do you have any services that offer career advice to students? Yes. Additionally, students are encouraged to speak with their instructors who all have real-world experience and industry knowledge. Do you have an Academic Advising service available? Yes. The Dean’s Office and Student Services provides academic advising to students. What computer services will students have access to? A full service computer lab is available for students. Being located in the downtown core, there are a number of restaurants, cafes and delis surrounding the campus. What is the average class size? The average class size is 20-25 students. Class sizes are intentionally kept small to facilitate better peer-to-peer interaction. This also allows the instructor more time to spend with each student. Can students work while attending university? Yes, if he or she chooses to do so. Undergraduate students most likely will attend classes during the day and on some evenings, but they have the choice of finding employment that works around class schedules. International students with work visas may work up to 20 hours per week. What type of transportation is available for students?
