How to Land a Job Interview After Graduation

Everything university grads need to know to make themselves stick out from the competition

Vancouver, BC - June 1, 2010 - Once graduation arrives, it's usually time to start looking for a job, but with an increasingly competitive job market it's important to make a great first impression on a prospective employer. The best way to do that is with a well-written and organized resume. The sole purpose of a resume is to get the hiring manager to send an email or pick up the phone and call you to schedule interview.

To land an interview, follow these resume writing tips:

Skills/Abilities: List transferable abilities at the top of your resume. Tailor each skill to meet the needs of each job in which you apply.

Personalization: A resume must be personalized for the job you are seeking, your credentials and the contribution you can make to the company. Take information from the job description advertisement and integrate it into your resume where applicable.

Results: List results, not descriptions. Illustrate how you met deadlines, managed responsibility and what the outcomes were from your actions and/or suggestions in previous positions. For instance, show how much time and money you saved the company by implementing a new filing or inventory control system.

Accuracy: Grammatical correctness and proper spelling are vital as it shows attention to detail skills.

Conciseness: Limit your resume to one page unless you have more than ten years of work experience.

Formatting: Use appropriate indenting and spacing. Adding extraneous detail or overwhelming the reader with a large header or fancy banner will make them throw your resume in the trash.

Professionalism: Never include personal information such as height, weight, hair/eye colors, marital status, or social security number.

Your resume will be a reminder to the interviewer after the interview. If your resume is written well and properly formatted, it may be the deciding factor in the hiring process.
