Flexibility makes education accessible to working professionals

Times Colonist - March 2, 2010 - Many working professionals know that investing in higher learning will be the key to their success. However, leaving a job in this economic climate is usually not an option. One Canadian university is making it easier for working professionals to earn an undergraduate or MBA degree without leaving their current career.

Victoria-based University Canada West offers a variety of flexible options for students including part-time studies, evening classes and online education programs. It also accepts course credits from other B.C. and Canadian universities, as well as from a number of courses and programs from community colleges. For example, with University Canada West's Degree Completion program, you can turn a college business diploma into a Bachelor of Commerce degree in as little as two years.

"University Canada West is at the forefront of education for working learners," said Dr. Verna Magee-Shepherd, Acting President, University Canada West. "Our innovations in higher learning are making a real difference for many students who may otherwise not have had a chance to pursue a degree."

Students who are enrolled in an online program get the same personalized experience campus-based students do. Online class discussions and chat rooms encourage interaction and private messages and email are available for students to contact professors. However, online learners can schedule these communications around work or family commitments.

Online courses are held in a web-based format that is flexible and easy to use while professors instruct the classes by using online lecture notes, discussion forums, web readings, assignments and other resources.

University Canada West may grant a student credit for training taken outside of the academic environment through its Prior Learning Assessment. Any training a student has taken through his or her employer, as long as it is relevant to their program, is eligible for review under the Prior Learning Assessment Recognition process.

In addition to these options, students with a Bachelor of Commerce or Bachelor of Business Administration degree can earn an MBA within a year, thanks to an intensive 12-month program. By fast-tracking through an MBA degree, students can finish faster and start their careers sooner. "Education is a sound investment because it allows professionals to develop in their positions, advance in their careers, and change roles," said Dr. Magee-Shepherd. "A degree is a recognized credential for people on the move."
